Instructional salary expenditure (Z33) divided by estimated teacher FTE.
Total expenditure divided by enrollment, a measure of district investment.
Total students, which contextualizes the salary estimate and budget scale.
How This Tool Works
Enter the names of two US school districts to compare their estimated average teacher salaries. Data is sourced from the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) F-33 Local Education Agency Finance Survey, Fiscal Year 2022. Salary estimates are derived by dividing total instructional salary expenditure (Z33) by estimated teacher full-time equivalents based on enrollment.
The comparison includes average salary, enrollment figures, per-pupil expenditure, and the percentage difference between the two districts. All figures represent district-level aggregates, not individual teacher salaries. For specialized non-enrolling agencies (career/technical centers, county offices) the enrollment-based salary estimate is flagged as unreliable. See our methodology for details.
Salary comparison FAQ
How do I compare two school districts’ teacher salaries?
Enter two US district names in the boxes above. PlainTeacher looks up each district’s estimated average teacher salary from the NCES F-33 data and shows them side by side, along with enrollment, per-pupil spending, and the percentage difference.
What salary figure does the comparison show?
The estimated average teacher salary, total instructional salary spending divided by an estimated teacher headcount (enrollment ÷ 15). Because that spending includes aides and assistants, the estimate runs higher than survey-reported classroom-teacher salaries, so treat it as a relative comparison, not an exact paycheck.
Can I compare districts in different states?
Yes. The tool compares any two of the 13,000+ US public school districts in the dataset, regardless of state. Cross-state comparisons are valid because every district uses the same NCES F-33 estimate.
Where does the comparison data come from?
The NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) F-33 Local Education Agency Finance Survey, Fiscal Year 2022, a mandatory federal survey of every public school district. See our methodology for the exact formula.
