Teacher salary by state dataset
A compact, reusable state-level comparison of estimated teacher salary in all 50 states and D.C. Each row is recomputed from PlainTeacher’s reliable district records, rather than copied from a static table.

This separate 51-jurisdiction release compares the same estimated-salary basis from FY2019 through FY2022. It shows a multi-year change, not a one-year contract increase, and keeps the historical method separate from the current FY2022 salary snapshot.
How the dataset is made
PlainTeacher calculates each state value as an enrollment-weighted average of district salary estimates. The district pool excludes records with an implausible salary estimate or fewer than 200 enrolled students, so specialized service agencies do not distort a state comparison.
The calculation uses NCES Common Core of Data F-33 instructional-salary expenditure and CCD Staff Universe teacher-headcount data. The result is a consistent relative comparison, not a published contract pay scale, a starting salary, or an individual teacher’s compensation.
The change release uses the historical F-33 series from FY2019 through FY2022 and deliberately keeps one estimated-salary method across every year. It avoids presenting a change caused by a switch in the teacher-count denominator as a pay increase. 51 jurisdictions have enough consistent history for this release.
The downloadable state-summary file is dedicated to the public domain under CC0. Please preserve the source note when reusing it and verify consequential decisions against NCES and local district sources.
